The Light

The light.

Many people search for it, but the truth is that the light is searching for us.

No matter what pit we’ve fallen into: depression, addiction, pride, anger, lonliness; there is a light that is searching for us. It creeps into every crack and crevice in our life.

We hide from it through our sorrows and struggles because we know a glimpse brings hope but an eyeful stings. We fear that the light may reveal the things that dwell deep in the crypt of our heart.

The truth is the light is liberating.  It warms our spirit and adds color to our world.  It frees us from the darkness.  It displays a world of beauty and wonder to our human heart.  This light brings life to the seeds that have been planted in our heart for years.

The light may be overpowering at first, but it’s just adjusting your eyes to see the beauty you’ve been hiding from in the depths of your soul.

Paper Cut Outs? I Thought This Was A Music Video…

This is the kind of stuff I was talking about yesterday.  This video has been out for months now but it still reigns in creative greatness. These are the ideas that cause my mind to churn.  Check out this “making of” video from B.o.B. or aka Bobby Ray:

I love the description of the idea about 2:00 mins. in.  The human imagination is truly a gift from above.

The Creative Lifestyle

Where are your creative vibes focused? Do you stretch yourself daily to stir your imagination and create something out of the depths of your mind?

Does your job force you to be a creative thinker? Are your classes stirring a drive to try something new? Does driving along the city street make you wonder how it’s all done?

Lately, for me, the production of award shows and concerts has absolutely taken my creative mind by storm. I couldn’t even watch the VMA’s without contemplating how it all was being done. There is something behind great minds planning a huge production, piece by piece, that cause my creative side to awaken. I want to know how they rehearse, how they decide on acts, how they program the show, how they set up the stage, how they create the performance, and how they feel when they watch it all come together.

The creativity of the human race is absolutely incredible. It’s as though God made the canvas, painted most of it, and then left the rest for us to fill in with the creativity he’s given us.

Where do you fit into all this? What are those creative (yes maybe even weird) thoughts you have that cause your mind to race? Is it while you sit in nature, is it mid-flight across the country, is in while you sit in front of a canvas, is it while you record in a studio, is it while you’re deciding what to cook for your family, is it during a board meeting at work, is it while you study after class? Where do you see creativity tak

What Have We Become?

The past few months of my life have been different than any other.

For the first time I have begun asking questions instead of going with the flow.

My entire life I have been attending church. I really think I was in church the week after I was born.  The modern day church has also been a substantial part of my life.

Now as I’m getting older and forming opinions based off of experiences and study, I’m starting to question a lot of what we (the Church) are doing.

I, as most of you probably have, grew up in a Church society full of skits, concerts, cheesy t-shirts, books, and conferences.  For the first time I am beginning to question the purpose of our mission.

I believe the Church is full of people who fear and love the Lord, but I am concerned with the drive behind our services and events.

It seems to me that church has become just as much about an experience as most of today’s consumer driven companies.  We put on a show that can hold it’s own against any Vegas attraction, but is it really doing anything to solidify and grow our relationship with God?

I understand that argument that says “non-Christians need to be drawn in by experience”, but is it truly valid?  If we truly meet every Sunday and Wednesday to worship the God we learn about in Scripture then why do we feel we need a flawless, consumer driven production? After all didn’t He use a donkey and a slow-speaking murder like Moses?

Instead of providing a place where authenticity and interaction with God are the focal points, we have created a Church that does it’s best to compete with the experience driven market around us.  We’ve taken our ability to live led by the Holy Spirit and turned into a Church that does it’s best to reflect a real experience with God through goosebumps and emotionally stirring guitar riffs.

Yeah, I’m a little shocked I’m saying these things too.  If you know anything about me you know that I have been a part of some incredible productions and modern day church events.  I have been blessed with opportunities to use my creativity in the modern church, but I feel like it’s time to harbor that in different ways.  I think the Church should be all about creativity and imagination, but instead of imagining a building filled with thousands of people just like us why don’t we dream of an end to world hunger? Why don’t we focus our creative energy on solving homelessness in our backyards? Why don’t we stop worrying about the amount of lights we need for the worship service and worry about the amount of mouths we can feed during the upcoming holiday season?

The Church needs to make some major changes.  We need less famous Christians and more famous people who love Christ.  We need less talk and more action.  We need less clique community and more impacted communities.  We need less of an experience and more emphasis on a true change in lifestyle.

Church is once a week, a relationship with Christ is for eternity.  We can thrill people every Sunday but if they aren’t being taught to pray and fully devote their lives to Christ a raised hand during an altar call is only temporary.

Everyone’s Story (Video Blog)

We’ve Got A Problem

I recently read a quote that both baffled and enlightened me all at once:

“Although megachurches have multiplied across the fruited plains, the numbers show that Christianity in America has been consolidating and not expanding.” (Jethani, Skye. The Divine Commodity)

Now I’m not a rocket scientist but for some reason this single sentence challenges the claim of today’s Church.

For some reason we believe that the church is stronger, more equipped, and thriving more than it ever has.

The truth of the matter is, we’re wrong.

We may be the most equipped and able generation the Church has ever seen but we are forgetting what it means to be in the world and not of it.  We have began to sell church as a product and experience rather than a way of life.  I am in no way saying that we, as modern day Christians, don’t love the God we serve, but I am expressing a need to be different.

What makes us different than the rest of society?  We have good morals and standards and we preach about a God who wants us to live a life of servanthood but sadly, some outside Christianity are doing a better job than we are.

I love the fact that “Causes” have sprung up all around the world to provide means of social justice. The mere fact that people are putting their needs behind the needs of others is incredible.  The only question I have is why didn’t The Church think of this first?  Why has social justice became a part of the consumer lead market coming from people who serve simply because they know it feels right?

Shouldn’t The Church be leading the charge in seeing justice come for those in need?

Shouldn’t we set the example simply because we know how God  feels about the hurting?

Maybe those outside The Church are doing a better job of representing Christ than we are.

This is the example on the forefront of my mind that speaks to the consolidation of modern day Christianity.  It’s almost as if we fear stepping out from the flock and doing something different.

I don’t have a problem with the megachurch, as long as we understand that each and every person that belongs to that community has a specific purpose for being on this Earth.  Our collective size means nothing if noone is willing to step out and pursue the individual purpose God has placed on their life.

We must expand, not consolidate.  We must collaborate, not copy.  We must walk beside each other, but keep personal passion.

Most importantly we must be in the world, but not of it.

It’s In Our Hands,

A Talking Heart

Decisions, Decisions

Do you know when something just “feels” right?

I’m not talking about reckless intuition, but rather that peace that God places deep within your heart.

We face many decisions throughout life and strangely enough, the more we want God’s direction the harder it is to accept it.

I know that many God-fearing people, including myself, have spent countless sleepless nights dwelling on the decisions ahead.

As we seek God’s direction we fear making decisions on our own. We begin to neglect the intellect and spiritual heart God created us with.

Here is the way I look at it:

If God has given us a mind to think and heart to feel and we spend time in devotion with Him, we will have a personal understanding of what is right and what is wrong in our decision making. As we grow closer to God and set our mind and heart in tune with Him we can rest assured that our heart won’t lead us astray as it is moved by him.

Next time you come to a decision that just “feels” right and doesn’t compromise any of His standards, maybe you should just move rather than question the spiritual design that you were created with. God doesn’t want you to sit around dazed and confused, He would rather you get out and make progress towards His vision.

Trust your heart as you entrust it to Him.

Seems Too Simple,

Bragging On God

How many of us actually take the time to think about our blessings?

When I say think, I mean REALLY think.

I can tell you that today is one of those days where life is put into perspective.

All my complaints and shortcomings are set aside as I ponder on the amount of blessing a god has poured into my life.

I have a beautiful wife, an extremely fun job, a healthy body, and a God who is always accessible.

There is no way I could need more than I have. God has provided me with every essential plus abundance at a young age and I am so thankful. I definitely don’t deserve all of this given my imperfect nature, but because of God’s grace I am blessed.

I’m not trying to brag I’m just putting it into perspective. Chances are that if you’re reading this right now on a computer that you own, you’re in the same boat.

Take some time to be thankful for your blessings today. Don’t boast, but be forever grateful for the life God has blessed you with, even with your shortcomings and failures.

God is forever faithful.

I Can Brag On God Right?

Subliminal Marketing

How effective is your marketing strategy?

Now I’m no marketing guru, come to think about it I haven’t taken a single class but I am a consumer and I’m going to come at this from that perspective.

We are constantly bombarded with marketing everywhere we go.

The stadiums we watch sports in are covered in ads and signage.

The websites we regularly browse have banners on all sides.

The T.V. we watch constantly streams commercials into our living rooms. (Sometimes more than tv shows, MTV!)

The streets we drive have billboards and LCD screens that cause us to collide with the suddenly stopped car in front of us.

What I’m trying to say is that marketing has become just as much a part of life as breathing.

If it’s so normal, then why is it so essential?

How many times have you seen a Pepsi logo and immediately ran to the nearest Circle K to pick one up?

Probably never.

The key to their marketing isn’t when you buy their product, but how you recognize it.

You see, I simply mentioned a Pepsi logo and Circle K and I would bet every person reading this immediately had a mental image of what I was discussing.

These two companies have done something right. You have them burned within your mind. They have placed enough marketing around you to familiarize you with their product. They are out there. You know them and that’s all they care about. You may have never met their CEO but somehow you feel connected to the product. You may be an avid Coke fan for that matter, but your hatred for Pepsi may cause someone you influence to try the product and form their own opinion.

So having said all of this, what are you trying to market?

What idea?

What product?

What blog?

The presence is key. Who represents you is essential. They way your logo, ads, and product presentation make consumers feel is more important than their immediate complete focus. Make sure they know what you stand for and who you are before expecting their loyalty. They will come once their interest is sparked.

Get out there. Be your product. Allow us humans to do the rest.
